Abstract

It is no wonder that students’ participation is an important in every teaching and learning process. There is an assumption that high students’ participation will increase students’ achievement. This research was intended to solve the problem of students’ participation in learning tenses. This research involved a class whose participation was considered low by the teacher and research collaborator. The data were collected through observation, test, documentation, and questionnaire. Based on the pre-observation, teaching medium was identified as the problem sources. The teacher did not use any learning medium in teaching tenses. The research team agreed upon the way to handle the problem by using English songs. The pre-observation showed that students’ participation only achieved 57.59%. In Cycle 1, students’ participation became 67.61%, and it could achieve 70.99% in Cycle 2. Thus, students’ participation was higher than 65% as the success indicator. This result was supported by the result from test and questionnaire. From the test result, there was an improvement of students’ achievement in each Cycle. In Cycle 1, the improvement of students’ achievement was 46.72%, and it achieved 93.52% in Cycle 2. Furthermore, the average score of students’ tenses mastery in the post-test of Cycle 2 was 77.16. Meanwhile, almost all of the questionnaire items got positive response from the students. As a result, English songs are a good medium to improve students’ participation in learning tenses.
